About Link Exchanges / Link Farms

Reciprocal links are links which are exchanges between different websites, the link is reciprocated. As the practice of obtaining reciprocal links grew, there began to emerge resources for people engaged in this practice and so the link exchange was created.

Link exchanges can focus on text links, where simple text links are exchanges or they can focus on banner advertisements, where banner ads are exchanged (banner exchange). Link exchanges can be a paid for service or a a free link exchange service where links are reciprocated. Often link exchanges form a network of sites where advertisements (links) are rotated throughout a variety of sites, with your site having adverts (links) on it as well as adverts (links) pointing to it).

A link farm is usually a paid for service where by a payment is made and in return your website receives many incoming links from a wide range of different websites. Often the link farm pages containing your link is a large page full of links to different websites (other people who have signed up for the service), the webpage itself is of very little intrinsic value and is likely to generate little traffic, the purpose of the link farm is to increase incoming links to your website, thus increasing your link popularity. There is however a problem with this...

Problems with Link Exchanges / Link Farms

One of the main reasons people sign up with link exchanges and link farms is to increase their link popularity and improve their search engine ranking. However, search engines consider this practice to be a deceptive method of trying to make your website appear more popular than it actually is. Most importantly, search engines identify unscrupulous link exchanges and link farms and penalise those websites which are participating in the scheme. So whilst a link exchange or link farm may seem a quick fix solution to search engine positioning, it is a very risky practice which can lead to expulsion by search engines. It should be avoided.
